Ipswich: Multifamily moratorium heads to town meeting

IPSWICH --- Concerned about the impact recent developments have had on the town, the Select Board has OK'd a proposal to enact a two-year moratorium on multifamily developments of three units or more so the town can develop a master plan. Under the proposal, single-family houses would still be allowed, as would single-family subdivisions and accessory apartment conversions. Voters will have the final say on the proposal at May 10 Town Meeting.

North Adams: To get $75K in ARPA funds for shelter

NORTH ADAMS --- The nonprofit Louison House, which operates Flood House in North Adams and Terry's Place in Adams, has received a $75,000 grant to support its efforts to shelter those in need. The funds come from the federal government's American Rescue Plan Act, and were requested through an amendment filed by Sen. Adam Hinds and supported by state Rep. John Barrett.

Newton: Co-developers spell out plans for armory

NEWTON --- The firms chosen to co-develop the Newton Armory answered several questions from the community recently regarding how they plan to reuse the 110-year-old building. Representatives from Metro West Collaborative and Civico Development said the front part of the armory will be preserved and used for a variety of historic and community uses while the field house attached to the back will be replaced with a new wing featuring 43 affordable apartments. MetroWest CD will also be relocating its headquarters to the second story of the armory.

Law: Racist covenants still stain property records

Racial covenants can be found in property records all over the country, including Massachusetts, where many restrictions were written from the late 19th to mid-20th century. Despite laws that rendered these covenants illegal, some state lawmakers and judges remain concerned that the clauses are still included in property recordsand they are trying to figure out the best way to amend the records to reflect the fact that such clauses are no longer permitted.
